A Hark H'Jarad Affair: Veiled Faith

Session 9

The Marshal’s Notes

  • Took my expert’s head to the chapel of K’horrat to pray over his loss.
  • Noticed that the lectern there had a book-key indentation.
  • After some time praying, the mortar of the wall opposite started glowing green.
  • I noticed a cold chill which appeared to be coming from a black cloud creeping into the room.
  • The green glow was cycling through a pattern that coalesced at a point.
  • Decided to use the book to trigger the lectern, causing the wall to open up.
  • The hole wasn’t big enough to escape through, so put the box into it. The hole closed up, and the fires of a furnace were heard.
  • With little time to spare before the approaching mist, performed some experimentation with my sword and a dispelling bolt, ascertained that the magic within the bolts cause the mist to retreat. Attempted to fashion an addition to my clothing to provide protection.
  • With seconds to spare, retrieved the book of prayers, and found a suitable passage to pray with, for some more assistance from K’horrat. The wall behind immediately appeared to be a secret door, which I used to escape to a small, dark room.
  • Spent the time protected making the dispelling adjustments to my armour more effective. Went to leave and realised that I was stuck.
  • Prayed to K’horrat to let me out to protect others, and let my faith protect me. The door opened and I ran as fast as I could to the Library.
  • Managed to squeeze through the door as a rat, closing it behind me. After entering the Library, found that it started raining the oil from the ceiling.
  • Talked to a nearby Templar and appraised him of the situation. Ascertained the Key Repositor’s location, and headed off to find him.
  • Found his notes scattered around his office. Found a prominent one saying “Turn the Key”. Grabbed the notes and stuffed them in my pack before going after him.
  • Got to the end of the bookcase, finding a pressure plate that brought a moving bookcase to transfer us to where the Key Repositor went. The Hermach and {{rob}} arrived as the bookcase arrived.
  • Getting down to where the ritual was taking place, Hermach Brinnigan appeared to be restrained, and the Key Repositor appeared to be conducting the ritual; creating a hemispherical magic shield as we arrived.
  • The Key Repositor attempted to dissuade us, so I demanded that he be convincing. Two others of the cultists attempted to plead with me by name. I recognised one of their voices.
  • I dispelled the protection and attempted to save Hermach Brinnigan from being sacrificed, unfortunately missing my mark on the cultist.
  • Brinnigan was saved by {{rob}}’s timely intervention, and pulled out of the ritual circle.
  • After brief interrogation, discovered that two of the cultists were my lost parents.
  • Gave my parents the vials, and attacked {{rob}}, pushing him off the platform. He recovered and ran off to get reinforcements. My father sacrificed himself to open the portal.
  • Added to the power of the portal with the oil-sodden grey rain-cloak, ignited by the Hermach’s personal flame. Didn’t manage to push him away.
  • Protected my mother against the Hermach’s attacks. Pushed the Key Repositor, my mother and myself through the portal before the Hermach had the opportunity to ruin things.

The Marshal’s Notes

  • Entered combat and managed to pacify most of the heretics.
  • Discovered a hole they were making, and part of their plan to take some of the well water.
  • A tentacle seized one of the heretics before we could subdue him and the lead heretic turned into a bat-winged, glowing-red-eyed monster.
  • Managed to covertly sample the waters of the well of tears.
  • The monster was killed, and set on fire by {{rob}}.
  • Tied up one of the prisoners, while the other bled out and was set on fire.
  • {{rob}} gave me command of five Templars after I stated my intention to interrogate the prisoner.
  • Selected the nearby temple of K’leff as a good location for the interrogation, positioned the prisoner on the altar and got one of the Templars to fetch some buckets of water. Proceeded to break his will.
  • Broke the prisoner, and discovered the following facts:
    • They were attempting to “turn the key”.
    • The mission was to feed the tears, feed what is beneath, to unite the family.
    • The things beneath must feed on the tears to “turn the key”.
    • The others are in the library.
    • When the family unites: {{ quote }}.
    • The prisoner was born in the inner ring.
  • Agreed to “let the prisoner go”. Said a prayer to K’leff and commanded the Templars to execute him.
  • A pair of black hands extended from the gates, and tore off his head, turned yellow, then disappeared with it.
  • Dismissed the Templars, sending one to fetch an attendant to clean the chapel, and another to notify the Hermach and {{rob}} of the other agents in the library.
  • Stored the phial of well water when alone, and checked in the box. Found the severed head of my analyst, the vial of {{angry goopy stuff}}, and a message reading:

Here’s your stuff back.
Don’t leave things like this in the wrong hands.
— A friend.
See you later.

Session 7

The Marshal’s Notes

  • Two messengers arrived and delivered news of otherworldly creatures attacking the East Outer Ring. A sailor, armed to the teeth was also mentioned.
  • The Hermach and Abyrn debated whether to go to the aid of the ‘filthy heathen scum’. It was eventually decided to try, and if they failed, the gods simply were passing judgement. Successfully kept mouth shut.
  • Hermach required tactical information on where to position forces. Brought map out and provided what expertise I could to his unit commanders.
  • Headed out to the well of tears. Found only two guards on the door, who apparently had their memories altered. Abyrn unfortunately noticed my magical perceptions; didn’t bother lying.
  • Since the other templars that should have been there, weren’t, Abyrn, as temporary commander of the First Drawn, replaced them with new ones, and the compromised two were relieved of their badges.
  • Eleph noticed that the ceiling was covered in strange symbols, and they seemed to be shifting. The symbols looked like a combination of Bekkain, Krhoratt and Kaielif. Investigating further, it seemed to be an active magical effect.
  • Attempting to dispel the effect, I fired a dispelling bolt into the symbols. Unfortunately it seemed to pass through the effect and strike the ceiling.
  • Abyrn attempted to burn the symbol with his holy fire. Failed to throw his sword high enough, so Eleph helped. The symbol of Bekkain was destroyed, revealing dried blood on the ceiling.
  • I was asked to attempt another dispelling, since my service is to Krhoratt and Kaielif. Took out the book of blessings and doctrine and attempted to find some useful blessing to enact while shooting the symbols.
  • The Hermach started looking behind the closed doors to see if any more information could be found; Templars and Abyrn helping. Found five decapitated templars.
  • The dispelling succeeded, revealing the fourteen missing templars impaled to the ceiling with their own spears. They appeared to be exsanguinated, and possibly powered the spell.
  • The next place to investigate would be inside the well of tears, but since no summons was made from the gods, Abyrn was unwilling to let the Hermach enter. An intense verbal conflict ensued, then the two proceeded to begin combat. Muckt’ba E’bah attempted to intervene.
  • Convinced the templars to open the doors to stop the fight. After they began, the fight stopped, and after some discussion, the two combatants assisted opening the door.
  • Peered into the room, and counted five figures inside, and four flanking the door just opened. The Hermach addressed the room, and significantly intimidated those flanking the doors.
  • We entered the room and I fired a flare in to light the place up. More effective than I expected; activated all the lights. One of the people on the far side took a jar of the water from the well and took cover again.
  • After some more intimidation and diplomacy, the four flankers were ordered to leave, and as they exited the chamber, they were executed by the templar guards on Abyrn’s orders. Their disguises disintegrated, revealing them to be the shape-changing cultists.
  • Advanced to the well and took cover before engaging the cultists.

Session 6

The Marshal’s Notes

  • After reviewing notes, discovered that the prophecy uttered at the beginning of this escapade appeared to have been enacted by us, and the actions of the templars in the outer ring. The path to the east has been cleared. Rain should be falling in the chapels soon.
  • Working on getting the samples taken from the various supernatural occurrences analysed and inspected. Received a summons from the Hemarch, with an escort of 50 Templars.
  • Arrived to see a mutilated corpse being dragged out of the Hemarch’s halls, and over a thousand Templars arrayed to receive a speech. The corpse appeared to be a Key Priest.
  • Talked to the Hemarch and discussed the situation. The Key Repositor is probably dead, and his research at the least scheduled for destruction.
  • Started the march, and noticed that the “moon” was slowly descending toward the citadel. It looked black with a blue ring around it.
  • Arrived at the central chapel, and removed the first drawn guarding it in favour of the Fourth Drawn commanded by the Hemarch. The first drawn gathering in the central chapel under the command of Abyrn.
  • Key Priest Dekaara appeared to not know what had transpired over the past day, and reported that Hemarch Brinnagan had not been seen since travelling forth to investigate the prophecy.
  • I presented the Key Priestess with a copy of the compiled and filtered notes from the mission into the library. While she balked at the heresy of the material, she was understanding, and appears to be someone to trust.
  • The Key Priestess commented on my lack of Central Ring robes, and after a brief discussion with Abyrn, I elected to wear the symbol of the First Drawn on my belt.
  • After all the discussion, it was resolved to hunt down Hemarch Brinnigan and Key Priest Akmardan.

Session 5

The Marshal’s Notes

  • Requested reinforcements and spread knowledge on how to relight the obelisks using the communication bells. Gave a brief report on what was happening to other sectors.
  • Found the corpse of the Templar that was killed by the crossbowman of the initial combat at the gate. Put a note on it to be delivered to the inner ring.
  • Reinforcements arrived. Redistributed flamebane stores. Commander took over organisation and reassigned me with two squads to sort out looters and investigate the rain’s cause.
  • Struck out in front of the police lines to clear a path and help survivors before doubling back behind and sorting out looters.
  • Discovered a blood-ritual of bodies that was just opening a portal via the blue flame. Managed to dispel the portal and avoid any men getting dragged in by the tentacles that emitted by it. Saw the evil-looking magic that appeared to be constructing the portal.
  • Disrupted the positioning of the bodies once the portal closed. Noticed the bodies were positioned in the combined symbol that was last seen in the Hermach’s court. Took samples of the tentacle head that was lopped off, and the ichor that it used for blood.
  • Sent half the squad back to inform the main force of what to expect, and how to deal with bodies, blood and blue flame. Recommended dispelling bolts, regular fire, and disrupting arrangements of bodies.
  • Grudgingly sent a communication to the Inner Ring, requesting aid subduing the riots and taking care of the portals cropping up. Workplace dynamic seriously disrupted when colleagues and superiors realise I’ve been blessed.
  • Spent time managing the damage the Templars were causing to the burnt structures and rioters. Commanded police to capture and arrest looters fleeing from the Templars.

Session 4

The Marshal’s Notes

  • Needed around 200ft of rope to get to the bottom of the crevasse
  • Found that the bottom of the shaft consisted of a light-absorbing, spongy, extremely cold, rock-like material. Sinking into it was a very real possibly.
  • Two options presented themselves, a flickering orange light, and a purple light.
  • On the way to the purple light, the monk stepped on something that broke the surface of the stone-like material. I retrieved roughly a foot of rock for later analysis and put it in a bag in my pack. One of the fallen templars was revealed to have been entombed below it.
  • The purple light appeared to be sourced from a leaking font of Lek’Sarroth where a mummified hand was to be protruding from.
  • After providing him with examination gloves, the monk pulled a fully mummified corpse out from the font and it began to glow. It appeared that the man died while kneeling, and was cocooned in that position.
  • The avenger rejoined the group in a shout and a flash of light. Apparently he found the target he was seeking and destroyed it.
  • After the monk warned me not to approach the body, he became pseudo-catatonic after attempting to collect a sample of the cocoon in my stead. He then started to walk toward the font, and after being told to stop him, I immobilised him with a disruptive shot.
  • The cocooned corpse was apparently an obseq, and touching it is sacrilege. According to the monk, they are supposed to ascend body and soul, but this is not the case.
  • The monk proceeded to sanctify the body, and start on the font itself. A sound was heard over some mounds, and was discovered to have originated from a repositor trapped in the ground, surrounded by eggshells and ancient pieces of paper.
  • After thinking about the rock a bit more, I pulled out the rock in my pack to check the temperature and properties, and it appeared to have started glowing.
  • The monk took a sample of the corrupted light pooling around the base of the font, and after putting it in the sample containers, noticed that the shadow-crab venom was animated. Secured the phial with wire.
  • Went to collect samples of the eggshells strewn around where the repositor was found. Highlights from the notes were read out by the librarian, and they seemed to primarily consist of fairly significant heresy.
  • The repositor woke up, and we decided to climb back to the top of the rope. The avenger provided his sash for the last 10ft, and everyone climbed back up.
  • Once back in the library, the repositor was interrogated, and confirmed the information found in his notes. He told us that he needed more time to compile and research his report for the key priests.
  • After asking what we could possibly do, investigating how to stop the oily rain using the obelisks in the city quarters was suggested by the repository. The obelisks apparently channel the energy of Shanoa.
  • During discussions of the repositor’s research, I expressed impressions of the Templar order from the perspective of the outer ring. I mentioned their arrogance and pride, and considering those of lesser standing to be truly lesser than them. The templar’s confirmed these impressions unashamedly.
  • We decided to head after the obelisks while Hermarch Brin reported to the key priests of our progress. The section of the city between two lines of obelisks was on fire from the oily rain.
  • After some experimentation and discussion, a pole with a mirror and a taper was constructed, and used to relight the obelisk fires that had died out. This information was propagated out to the templars.
  • I took my leave and speedily returned to the outer ring to inform them how to stop the rain, resupply and report to my superiors. Starting an investigation into who has been seen around the obelisks of Shanoa, and seeing what analysis can be made of the samples I have collected.

Session 3

The Marshal’s Notes

  • Combat with the creatures that had emerged from the library pit ended.
  • Collected some of the ichor that one left behind
  • The Hemarch requested assistance investigating a severed hand.
  • The hand appears to have been severed by a giant pincer, and possesses marks that would indicate two missing rings. Clean fingernails, clean hands. The hand was certainly lost in a struggle, and the nearby blood trail would indicate that the owner was dragged into the nearby pit.
  • The two missing rings were taken by Hermarch Brinnigan.
  • After some convincing, the rings were allowed to be copied with foaming plaster.
  • Hermarch Brinnigan doesn’t believe in the literal legend of the crux of tread.
  • The Repositor appeared to be investigating something that he thought to require templar assistance
  • After compiling scattered notes together, it appears the respositor was investigating the crux of tread.
  • The notes appear to describe the current events as being a planar intertwining, a war for the Holy, and a coming of H’Jarad’s ‘family’.
  • Before any more details could be discovered, the creatures kidnapped the Avenger.
  • Collected up and stored the notes for future reading, then noticed a book/lever that opened a secret staircase leading down.
  • Proceeded down the staircase, the central pillar emanating the purple light from slits.
  • A book-trigger was at the bottom, and the Monk/Priest and I went up a level to retrieve some correctly shaped books. Creatures were heard but not seen.
  • The passage opened with the retrieved book, and a passage revealed.
  • At the end of a bookcase at the bottom there was a pressure plate that after some investigation, moved another bookcase across the yawning chasm.
  • After some complications with the mechanism, that appeared to be based around lamps of blue flame, we managed to get across to the main walkways.
  • The Obitumorian disappeared after making his way across, the rope going immediately taut.
  • We pulled the Obitumorian back up and proceeded down the spiral staircase nearby.
  • The creature attacked me, and I managed to roll to safety and shrug off the wounds.
  • As the rest of the group reached the bottom of the stairs, the creature abducted the Obitumorian again. After hitting the creature with a biting quarrel, it disappeared long enough to send my rope across.
  • After some confusion with a secret passage and cutting off the rope, we managed to get the Obitumorian back, but as the passage closed again, the creature became caught in the mechanism.
  • The creature was dispatched, and I collected a sample of its blood.
  • Some places for a ladder were found, but without a ladder, we needed to link two ropes together to descend to the bottom of the pit.

The Marshal’s notes

  • After arriving in the inner ring, a priestess and templars took me off to be tested
  • Stood on a pair of blocks, then failed to keep my footing while they separated
  • Figuring out which direction to progress based on clues spoken by testers
  • Progressed in the right direction without being hurt by traps
  • Undid my bonds and lit a lamp in a dark room with the flint on its base
  • Ignited the oil system with my bonds, opening some side doors
  • Determined from the text that the right passage was north, used the book in a depression there
  • Found other book depressions, and used them to reveal some other passages
  • Talked to two testers, got blessed by one, and got a hint for the test from the other
  • Put the book back on its plinth, and hopped through before the passage closed.
  • Confessed my envy to the testers and received a book to study and protect
  • Triggered the final buttons and discovered the exit.
  • Got my boots and equipment back from the templars was taken back to the Hermarch
  • The templars did not return the crossbow from the murder at the gates
  • Was escorted to the well of tears when the Hermarch was found to have moved
  • Engaged a number of creatures in combat upon arrival

The Marshal’s Notes

  • Attack on Gate to the Inner Ring by force unknown
  • Hunting a group of thieves in the building near the gate
  • Three Templars killed, one by crossbow, two by “priestesses”
  • “Priestesses” distracted Templars with inappropriate behaviour
  • “Priestesses” also seen giving out blessings
  • Probably escaped into the walls after attack
  • Detained crossbow sniper, recovered weapon
  • Jurisdictional issue with Templars claiming theirs
  • Sheriff instructed to raise issue
  • Accompanying Templars into the Inner Ring
  • Attending court in the Inner Ring for oversight
  • The “priestesses” that blessed the pilgrims did it in a devotion hall
  • Judgement was passed on the pilgrims that ran toward the gate
  • A Key Priest intercedes, and two of the Templars execute their charges
  • A tense fight erupts as they continue to attack those around them
  • The Hermach summons a spear with “Ar’bit-rium”
  • Confusion reigns throughout the fight, no-one knowing who to attack
  • A monk moved incredibly fast and saved my life
  • The two injured prisoners were saved from death by the Hermach
  • One of the Templars was killed and replaced with an assailant
  • The Key Priest that started the whole fight attempted to stop it
  • My charge was attempting to escape, so I stopped him
  • The monk took out one of the assailants, who’s disguise failed
  • The Key Priest called for everyone to drop their weapons and to their knees
  • Everyone complies apart from a Templar, who attacks him
  • The Key Priest disappears and another Templar loses his head
  • Another Monk joins the fight and attacks the now visible assailant
  • The monk dispatches the final assailant who’s disguise drops
  • The Hermach and Templar had a discussion on faith and risk
  • The monk stabilised the wounded pilgrims
  • The Hermach then healed the wounded some more
  • Some more administration ensued, bodies cleared, etc.
  • Blood started to move funnily along the cracks in the tiles
  • The Hermach ordered oil and fire thrown on it
  • A priestess appeared in the central plinth, communicating with The Hermach
  • Apparently signs have been seen in the sky heralding a tear
  • The Hermach announced himself as Hermark Quintus Magnus
  • The Hermach interrogated my charge, and then executed him
  • The Hermach went on to the next assailant and started another interrogation
  • More success this time, the assailant heralded enlightenment and conflict
  • The Hermach judged him to be flensed over a basin of fire
  • The last assailant was tortured by the Hermach, and choked out: “How can you do this and pretend to be so holy”. Rebels? Anti-establishment?
  • The assailant quoted: “Clear the path from the east, then the rains will fill the temple, as the blue moon is set usunder”
  • The assailant vomited his entrails out into a combination of religious symbols
  • Templars cleansed the symbol and blood with more oil and fire
  • It appeared to be raining oil outside, and the Hermach ordered people inside
  • Blue flames have been spotted more and more, apparently they mean the gods are present. In tales, it apparently was the wall of purification at the border of the Citadel
  • The Hermach requested everyone present to attend the summons
  • Before crossing the threshold, the Templar threatened me, and I rebuked him
  • The Hermach thanked me for my attention to duty, and I explained my position
  • The monk lead everyone through some passages to avoid the rain
  • A purple glow was coming from some windows, possibly something to do with the Lekk’Sarroth Faith
  • Arrived in the Central Chapel. Key Priests Dekaara and Akmardan present.
